Zero Waste Makeup - Tried and Tested
One of the biggest zero waste lifestyle changes is transitioning from plastic ridden makeup and beauty items to zero waste, natural. Most traditional makeup is filled with nasty, harsh chemicals that not only negatively affect our health, but also our environment. When I began my ZW journey, I had the hardest time finding makeup that contained zero plastic packaging and was also shipped sustainably. I spent hours upon hours scouring the internet, mainly Etsy as I believe in supporting small businesses as a first priority (and you should, too!). I have personally tried every product shown below, and I use them all on a daily basis. They've all exceeded my expectations and I am so excited to share them with you! Please feel free to leave a comment with any questions/concerns you have and I will surely try my best to answer them!
- Foraged Fields was one of the very first companies I added to the shop when it first opened and it’s a company that I will continue to stock for as long as I can. All of their products are formulated with entirely natural ingredients, most of which you can literally eat without any negative affects. Every product is as simple yet affective as possible and that’s what I love! The powder foundation (pictures above) is made with three ingredients: arrowroot starch, bentonite clay, and rhassoul clay- that’s it! It’s amazing to find products that truly change the standards you’ll set for future purchases! Foraged Fields powder foundation can be found in our shop here or purchased directly from Foraged Fields here (she offers more inclusive shades in her shop). Cost: $14
- Sustainyoself is a shop run by two girls (twins) right out of Minneapolis, Minnesota! One of my favorite things about their shop is how local they are. One of the most sustainable choices you can make is to shop locally before sourcing your items elsewhere. Not only does this reduce the costs and carbon footprint associated with shipping, it also allows you to support small businesses that are in the same area as you. It's a win-win! The tinted lip balm from Sustainyoself is absolutely amazing. It has the perfect balance of color and moisture. One of the things I look for, especially in lip balm, is that it isn't drying, and this lip balm is everything but! Each lip balm comes in a cardboard tube (yay!) which can be composted or recycled when it's all gone- believe me, it lasts a loooooong time! This tinted lip balm & cheek tint is formulated with very few ingredients to get the job done; local beeswax, organic coconut oil, organic jojoba oil, organic cocoa powder, red iron oxide powder. You can find Sustainyoself's lip & cheek tint (along with deodorant, lotion bars, and more) on their website here. Cost: $12
- Nudi Goods is a zero waste makeup/beauty brand based in Santa Cruz, California. They offer everything from lip balm to cosmetics to candles, and more! I've been using their Raven Cake Mascara for a few weeks now and I have to say, I am head over heels, in an all consuming love with it! It's not "wet" like the mascara most of us are used to. It contains absolutely zero preservatives or chemicals so there may be a small 'adjustment period' but that period is sooo worth it! This mascara does not clump, it doesn't flake and it doesn't make your eyelashes feel like they're stuck together (ew!). Formulated with only Bentonite Clay, Activated Charcoal, Coconut Oil, Beeswax, and Shea Butter. You can find this mascara, along with lots of other sustainable goodies on Nudi Goods' website here. Cost: $8.75
- River Organics is a sustainable beauty company located in North Carolina. All of their products are made with organic plant oils and butters and produced in small batches in sustainable recycled cardboard. They pretty much have anything you could ever need in terms of beauty AND they're sustainable.. do you see where we're going here? I have yet to try most of their goods, but I have tested their Vegan Lip Balm in the shade 'Rouge' and let me start off with one word.. Magic. This lip balm is absolute magic. It doesn't have a ton of color right away, which I like because it is build-able so if I want more color I can just layer it up! The shade 'Rouge' has a sort of shimmer tint to it, which I really like because it can be dressed up or down depending how you feel! The ingredients are Coconut Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil, Candelilla Wax, Organic Cocoa Butter, Mango Seed Butter, Vitamin E( made from wheat germ), Mica, & Iron Oxide. If you want to check it out, River Organics tinted sheer lip balm- and all of their other amazing beauty products, can be found on their website here. Cost: $12
